The Good Samaritan

Based on various patristic meditations of the parable of The Good Samaritan, this icon adopts various metaphors to tell the parable in a new light. In this icon an aging Adam becomes the man beaten by robbers. The robbers themselves become a symbol of sin and the burden of the world bearing down on us. Christ adopts the role of the Saviour who fulfils what even the priest and the Levite (the law and the prophets) could not. In this scene the law and the prophets are personified by Moses and John the Baptist. The innkeeper here is represented by a church leader who stands to receive the rescued man and care for him until Christ himself returns again.
